Capture the Warm and Fuzzy: Marketing Through Nostalgia

Think back to the days you used to run inside from playing ball with the neighborhood kids on a Saturday afternoon and there would be hot, gooey cookies on the table. Ahh, that fresh-out-of-the-oven smell and those hot chocolate chips on your tongue. What if, as an advertiser, you could capture that feeling and use it to sell your product or business? You can, and in fact, it even has a name. Welcome to the concept of Nostalgia Marketing.

Nostalgia Marketing can be incredibly effective in times of hardships, which is why nostalgia ads are becoming much more prevalent today. Companies are trying now more than ever to tap into that “warm and fuzzy” feeling aiming to make consumers relate it to their brand. Among the brands using nostalgia in advertising are Jack Daniel’s, Microsoft Windows and Lego, each of which experienced an 18-27% increase in sales last year.

Appleton Creative took that advice to heart and produced campaigns routed in nostalgia for a year of anniversaries. As the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority celebrated their 30th anniversary, we designed their anniversary logo, several promotional print pieces, and shot and produced a video including clippings, interviews and photos from the last 30 years.

Our team also worked closely with the Expressway Authority to help them celebrate their big 50th anniversary. We documented their momentous events by designing a timeline booklet and a variety of environmental branding pieces including signage and wall installments. The Appleton video team was in on the action as well, producing a video showcasing the organization’s historic 50-years of existence. You can view the video and check out the historic timeline booklet we designed here.

Along with the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority and the Expressway Authority, CNL Financial Group also celebrated a large anniversary. Recently, to honor 40 spectacular years of business and community impact, Appleton Creative designed their commemorative logo. The logo accompanied a Cupola lighting ceremony outside CNL to view the building change their iconic purple to ruby red. Our video department went on-location to shoot footage of the spectacular event.

As we celebrated our own 25-year mark, we took our family, friends and clients on a walk down memory lane with an infographic highlighting our achievements. We concluded our celebrations by inviting a group of clients to watch a Solar Bears game in our private suite.
