As an art director, graphic designer and senior animator at Appleton, Eric’s lengthy career experience shines through. Especially with all the projects he’s completed for clients ranging from Hilton and Earthlinked Technologies to Orlando Health and Darden. Following the sixth year anniversary tradition, this month we’re celebrating his “candy anniversary.”
With nearly 20 years of design experience, Eric came to Appleton because of the professional and unique atmosphere. “I love knowing how I perform has a direct influence on the business.” He also enjoys Appleton’s close-knit company culture. “It really is a family, working in a setting like ours makes everyone bond versus the disconnection in a cube farm.” That’s why his favorite place at Appleton is the conference room where everyone comes to eat lunch and converse.
His fondest and funniest Appleton memory was staying late to fill creative director, Diana LaRue’s, office with helium balloons and streamers, only to discover the next day that all the balloons and streamers had fallen to the floor. “Work I can fix, but an office full of deflated helium balloons, I can’t,” Eric says.
Eric manages his many duties with a work ethic learned during his formative years in a rural farm community and a stint in the military. These experiences instilled a strict adherence to deadlines and a can-do attitude — skills Eric utilizes in every project. His proudest accomplishment is the poster series he created for the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. As an avid animal lover, Eric feels especially close to this client.
For Eric, the most rewarding part of agency life is simply getting to do what he loves, building bonds with team members and continuing his education. “The best part of the job is a successful project and a happy client,” Eric says.
If Eric could speak to his younger self, he’d offer succinct advice. “Save money, and then save some more.” But, to aspiring graphic designers, he has considerably more to say. “Never stop learning, and design for fun in your free time. Find a friend whose band needs a poster, or a buddy who needs a business card for his side business. To be successful, you need to live and breathe design, and to remain valuable you must continue to learn new skills.”
